Leaving Faron Woods, Returning to Skyloft

fi
My constant companion who does not enjoy fun.

After completing all of my tasks in Faron Woods , Fi says that she does notthink I am ready for Skyview Temple. I wish I could say that Fi was wrong, but she was right. I drank a red potion only moments after landing on the planet. Alright, off to Skyloft I go!

Anyone who loves efficiency would hate the next hour of my game time. I decided that I was going to ignore my guide and explore on my own. You can guess where this is going, right? Yep, I ran all over Skyloft and the air like a cucco. It was embarrassing.

As soon as I got above the clouds, I decided to get all of the treasure chests. I then went to Skyloft where I discovered several quests that took me to places that were near many of the newly opened treasure chests. This would not be that big of a deal, but I am not great at hitting all of the wind turbine rocks, so it takes forever to get to the far corners of the map. Where is my ocarina? I am Link, so I should just warp everywhere!

One place that was fun but weird was the Bamboo Island where I met Peater. Peater is a bit creepy, because he is obsessed with protecting his daughter to the point that he is stress eating. There are not too many eligible partners for his daughter, so he probably knows all of them anyway. Does he think that she is going to runaway? Peater, buddy, she would have already left if there was someplace she could go. Peatrice and her future partner will end up living next door to him. Peater needs to chill out.

It was very satisfying to be able to visit Beedle’s Air Shop and buy a few high end items. I also loved that I could even buy a few items in the bazaar. The Goddess chests really helped me gather rupees!

Faron Woods

Faron Woods
Where the journey ended last time

Ah, Faron Woods, my old friend. When I arrived in Faron Woods (technically the Sealed Grounds (according to Zelda Dungeon), I got into a little trouble with the Deku Babas and had to drink my red potion after enemy number two. ::sigh:: I am better than this, really. I soon realized that I was getting too close to the Deku Babas. As soon as I took a step back, I was killing them quite quickly. Thank goodness!

Next, I had my little story moments and then moved into the actual Faron Woods and the kikwis. This is where I stopped playing last night. This time,

kikiwi
Annoying little dude

after struggling for a bit, I pulled up a guide for the kikwis and moved on with my life. I regret nothing, especially since I had found one, but because I did not cut down all of the grass around him, the talk option was not available. Because I could not talk to him that maybe he was not a kikwi.

Speaking of which, did I tell you about my Skyward Smash (yes, this is what I am calling it, because I cannot remember its real name) issue? Well, on the first night that I played the game, my wiimote was not calibrated correctly, so I had to swing my arm around in every way possible to get the Skyward glow that I needed. On day two, I calibrated the wiimote, and I did the Skyward Smash faster. Link looks like an idiot as I swing my arm around. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will not need it for the final battle.

Welcome to Skyloft

In order to keep things organized, I am going to write one post or so for each area I visit. This way I can catalog my thoughts neatly. Okay, here we go with Skyloft!

Octorok-GrassI think I need to start this first post regarding Skyward Sword with a confession:  I barely played Skyward Sword. I kept getting lost in Faron Woods, and I had trouble blocking the octoroks, so I got frustrated and left the game for something else. This makes Skyward Sword pretty exciting. I know that most people loved Skyward Sword, so it is great going into this game almost completely fresh. Unlike other video games, I tend not to watch Let’s Plays or read game spoilers for The Legend of Zelda games. I cannot wait to see what Skyward Sword has to offer!

One thing that struck me from the opening sequence is that Link is typically considered really lazy but he has this hidden potential. In fact, Zelda’s father, Headmaster Gaepora, even mentions that he always thought that Link had some hidden potential. I wonder if an actually lazy person would go through all of the trials and tribulations that Link chooses to go through in Skyward Sword and the later games. I do not want to get into later games, but I need to mention that my memory of Breath of the Wild does not have this trope. Link is selected to be the hero and he is scared, but he is not lazy.

Anyway, let us get back to Skyloft. I did not remember Zelda crushing on Link so much in this game. She really likes him, and it looks like her father is completely okay with this match and is pushing it too. This is an interesting set up for the “first” Link and Zelda. Based on what I have seen so far, I do not think that Link is clueless as to what is going on but instead that he might not see Zelda in that way. It does not appear that Link is even thinking about a future with Zelda outside of a friendship. Personally, I am a fan of this path, because I never thought about Link and Zelda as a romantic couple. Their destinies are intertwined due to a need to save Hyrule only. zelda skyward sword

Speaking of Zelda, she is a pretty happening character in this game. She has more backstory and personality than some of the other Zelda games that I played when I was younger. To be honest, I kind of want to play as Zelda in this game. I am a little farther into the game now, and I want to see what she is up to! Link is too slow, while Zelda is taking care of business. I loved how much Zelda had to say in Skyloft and how full of life she is. According to Zelda Dungeon, Zelda is not a princess. Maybe Zelda exhibits her personality, because she does not need to behave like a princess.

Another think I noticed was the skywings, and how they look like the bird for the symbol of Hyrule and The Legend of Zelda games. Are these birds that symbol? I think they are, but I might need to play more of the game to see. As the “first” game in the series, it is interesting to see how much of the lore in the future games starts in this game.

Groose Skyward SwordOne more thing that I need to mention from the opening in Skyloft: Groose. This guy is kind of horrible! Who ties of a huge, sentient bird just to get a kiss from Zelda? He just seems uncool. He also seemed obsessed with the father that Zelda and Link were childhood friends. Were they all not childhood friends? Skyloft is not very big. If they all grew up on this island, they could not avoid each other.

I wonder if they are suggesting that there are other places that people live or (and this is what I am wondering) if Skyloft has not been around for very long. Maybe Skyloft only appeared within their generation. This would explain why genetics do not seem to be a problem just yet. Inbreeding would be a problem otherwise in such a small community. I have so many questions for the residents of Skyloft!

Welcome

An idea popped into my head last night. This was not a new idea that I had, but one that I had several years ago, but I did not think that I had the time to do it. I was in graduate school at the time, and I was trying to keep my sanity in check. When I had the idea last night though, things were different. Now I am no longer in graduate school, and I have a flexible work schedule. At this point, you are probably dying to know what this crazy idea of mine was. Well, I decided that I wanted to play all of The Legend of Zelda games in chronological order. I did not want to play them in publication order, but chronological order. I decided to do this for two reasons: (1) I would be able to mix up the consoles that I would be using (e.g., Wii to Game Boy Advanced to New Nintendo 3DS) and (2) I could see if the order made sense, lore-wise. I wanted to inundate myself with Hyrule lore. I do not have the Four Swords or Four Swords Adventure games, so I am going to watch a YouTube Let’s Play of them unless I am able to get copies of them. I do have Tri Force Heroes, but I may watch a Let’s Play, because the game does not work well without two additional people. I am not going to play the CD-ROM or other spin-off games, because they are not included in the timeline.

I mentioned this idea to my husband and noted that I also wanted to combine this project with a website. I had not created a website in a while, and I was yearning to return to the world of websites and social media. Hide Your Pots was thus created. You might be wondering why the name Hide Your Pots. Well, my Zelda enthusiasts know the answer, but I will explain the name to the rest of the crowd. Link (the protagonist) in The Legend of Zelda series tends to break a lot of pots. In The Wind Waker, you can get into trouble for this, but most people do not even comment on the number of pots that you break. I like breaking pots in Zelda games, so I thought it would be a good idea to warn people of my intentions.

Below is the Zelda timeline that Nintendo created with a few additions that most people agree with. Breath of the Wild is not included yet, because there is some controversy as to where it goes. It seems to go somewhere around Ocarina of Time, but there are discussions that it goes someplace else entirely. At this point, I am going to play through all of the games through Ocarina of Time and see if there is an agreement as to where Breath of the Wild should go. If there is no agreement, I might decide to play it as my final game in the series just to end on a high note.
