Ah, Faron Woods, my old friend. When I arrived in Faron Woods (technically the Sealed Grounds (according to Zelda Dungeon), I got into a little trouble with the Deku Babas and had to drink my red potion after enemy number two. ::sigh:: I am better than this, really. I soon realized that I was getting too close to the Deku Babas. As soon as I took a step back, I was killing them quite quickly. Thank goodness!

Next, I had my little story moments and then moved into the actual Faron Woods and the kikwis. This is where I stopped playing last night. This time,

after struggling for a bit, I pulled up a guide for the kikwis and moved on with my life. I regret nothing, especially since I had found one, but because I did not cut down all of the grass around him, the talk option was not available. Because I could not talk to him that maybe he was not a kikwi.

Speaking of which, did I tell you about my Skyward Smash (yes, this is what I am calling it, because I cannot remember its real name) issue? Well, on the first night that I played the game, my wiimote was not calibrated correctly, so I had to swing my arm around in every way possible to get the Skyward glow that I needed. On day two, I calibrated the wiimote, and I did the Skyward Smash faster. Link looks like an idiot as I swing my arm around. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will not need it for the final battle.

In order to keep things organized, I am going to write one post or so for each area I visit. This way I can catalog my thoughts neatly. Okay, here we go with Skyloft!

I think I need to start this first post regarding Skyward Sword with a confession:  I barely played Skyward Sword. I kept getting lost in Faron Woods, and I had trouble blocking the octoroks, so I got frustrated and left the game for something else. This makes Skyward Sword pretty exciting. I know that most people loved Skyward Sword, so it is great going into this game almost completely fresh. Unlike other video games, I tend not to watch Let’s Plays or read game spoilers for The Legend of Zelda games. I cannot wait to see what Skyward Sword has to offer!

One thing that struck me from the opening sequence is that Link is typically considered really lazy but he has this hidden potential. In fact, Zelda’s father, Headmaster Gaepora, even mentions that he always thought that Link had some hidden potential. I wonder if an actually lazy person would go through all of the trials and tribulations that Link chooses to go through in Skyward Sword and the later games. I do not want to get into later games, but I need to mention that my memory of Breath of the Wild does not have this trope. Link is selected to be the hero and he is scared, but he is not lazy.

Anyway, let us get back to Skyloft. I did not remember Zelda crushing on Link so much in this game. She really likes him, and it looks like her father is completely okay with this match and is pushing it too. This is an interesting set up for the “first” Link and Zelda. Based on what I have seen so far, I do not think that Link is clueless as to what is going on but instead that he might not see Zelda in that way. It does not appear that Link is even thinking about a future with Zelda outside of a friendship. Personally, I am a fan of this path, because I never thought about Link and Zelda as a romantic couple. Their destinies are intertwined due to a need to save Hyrule only. 

Speaking of Zelda, she is a pretty happening character in this game. She has more backstory and personality than some of the other Zelda games that I played when I was younger. To be honest, I kind of want to play as Zelda in this game. I am a little farther into the game now, and I want to see what she is up to! Link is too slow, while Zelda is taking care of business. I loved how much Zelda had to say in Skyloft and how full of life she is. According to Zelda Dungeon, Zelda is not a princess. Maybe Zelda exhibits her personality, because she does not need to behave like a princess.

Another think I noticed was the skywings, and how they look like the bird for the symbol of Hyrule and The Legend of Zelda games. Are these birds that symbol? I think they are, but I might need to play more of the game to see. As the “first” game in the series, it is interesting to see how much of the lore in the future games starts in this game.

One more thing that I need to mention from the opening in Skyloft: Groose. This guy is kind of horrible! Who ties of a huge, sentient bird just to get a kiss from Zelda? He just seems uncool. He also seemed obsessed with the father that Zelda and Link were childhood friends. Were they all not childhood friends? Skyloft is not very big. If they all grew up on this island, they could not avoid each other.

I wonder if they are suggesting that there are other places that people live or (and this is what I am wondering) if Skyloft has not been around for very long. Maybe Skyloft only appeared within their generation. This would explain why genetics do not seem to be a problem just yet. Inbreeding would be a problem otherwise in such a small community. I have so many questions for the residents of Skyloft!
